Normally an AR video plays as a rectangle on top of your image. With background removal, the green or blue behind your subject becomes see-through, so a person or product appears to stand directly on the page. It is the same idea film studios use, adapted for the phone.
Shooting the clip
- Use a solid backdrop: a green or blue cloth or paper. Keep it smooth and flat.
- Light it evenly: shadows and bright patches make the color uneven, which makes it harder to remove cleanly.
- Keep the subject away from the backdrop: a step or two helps stop the color bouncing onto edges and hair.
- Avoid clothing in the same color: it will disappear along with the background.
Switching it on
On the Video AR upload form, add your image and video, then tick "My video has a solid green or blue background" in the Transparent background section. Choose Green or Blue, or pick the exact color from your video. ARView can also suggest a color from the corners of the video frame when the background is clear.
Tuning it
Two sliders let you adjust the result. "Remove" sets how much of the color range is taken out, and "Soft edge" smooths the border between the subject and the see-through area. A live preview shows the effect before you publish. If you can still see green around the edges, raise Remove a little. If parts of the subject are going see-through, lower it.
Choosing an image
The see-through background shows your image underneath, so pick a trigger image that works with the subject. Our guide to the best images for AR tracking covers what tracks well.
Shoot a short test clip first, run it through the preview, then film the real one. It takes minutes and shows you what to fix in the lighting. New to AR video? Read how to make an AR video.
Frequently asked questions
Which colors can be removed?
Green and blue screens. You can also pick the exact color from your video.
Will it look perfect?
It depends on how evenly your background is lit. Wrinkles and shadows make the edges harder to clean up, so shoot as evenly as you can.
Does it change my existing AR videos?
No. It is optional and applies only to videos where you switch it on when uploading.
