How AR reduces interior design revisions

Working with AR5 min readPublished October 2026

Ask a designer where revision rounds come from and the answers fall into three groups: taste changing, budget changing, and surprise. The third is the most avoidable. A piece arrives, or a layout is built, and the client realises it is not the size they pictured.

Taste, budget and surprise

Changes of taste and changes of budget are part of the work; no tool prevents them. Surprise is different. It is not a change of mind, it is the correction of a wrong picture, and it tends to show up late, when it is most expensive to act on.

Why flat images mislead on scale

A drawing or render has no fixed size on the client’s screen. The same sofa looks identical on a phone and on a monitor. Without a reference at a known size, clients estimate, and estimates are often off in ways neither of you notices until delivery.

What changes with AR

An AR view places the model at its real dimensions in the client’s actual room, next to their real walls and furniture. They can step back, walk around it and check clearances. Questions that used to surface after delivery, such as whether it is too deep or whether it blocks the door, get asked at the review.

Where AR does not help

  • Changes in taste or style direction.
  • Budget changes.
  • Colour and finish decisions, which depend on lighting and physical samples.
  • Anything that has not been modelled in 3D yet.

Use it at the approval moment

Save the AR link for the point where the client has to commit to something sized and costly. Ask them to place it where it will go, walk around it, and tell you what they notice. Record the answer in your approval notes so the decision is explicit.

Find out whether it is working

Track revision rounds on a handful of projects with and without AR review. A small sample is not statistical proof, but it will tell you quickly whether it changes the pattern in your practice.

Common questions

Does AR guarantee fewer revisions?
No. It removes one cause of them, misjudged scale. Revisions that come from changes in taste or budget are unaffected.
